Full of richness and character this is a very stable, solid sounding instrument with a clear sonority to the upper register and a brooding, refined lower register. The cello would suit a player looking for a refined, antique sound in a quartet, trio or orchestra. It was formerly played by Aleš Kaspřík, the first cellist of the Wihan Quartet.

.

The cello bears its original label reading,

“J. B. Dvořák fecit Pragae 1877”

.

Jan Baptista Dvořák was born in Unhost, Bohemia, Austrian Empire in 1825 and died in Prague, Bohemia, Austria-Hungary in 1890.

The famous Czech violin maker Jan Špidlen says of Dvořák: “He apprenticed at Jan Kulík, Prague. After that he worked in Pest at J. B. Schweitzer, in Vienna at A. Hofmann, at F. Patzelt and finally in Prague at I. Sandner. In 1847 after Sandner's death he overtook his workshop. J. B. Dvořák was the founder of the important violin maker dynasty of Dvořáks. He taught his two sons K. B. Dvořák and Jaroslav Dvořák. Besides them other makers who became later famous worked in his workshop: Tomas Zach, F. A. Homolka. His characteristic style is today highly valued not only in the Czech lands but also internationally.”
