About The Violin
About The Violin
Quite simply the pinnacle of fine old Italian violins in terms of quality, this stunning example of Carlo Tononi’s work is a masterpiece.
Tonally it performs to the highest level across all registers, with the character and grandeur found only with fine old Italian violins. Rich and full of historical character when played softly, and a clear, searing, almost ethereal sound when pushed to the limit. A tone that reaches through the centuries.
Constructed with the very finest quality one-piece, deeply flamed, shimmeringly close-grained maple only found in the early 18th century, the back and ribs are exhibition quality examples of musical instrument making material. Covering the instrument is a transparent, honey coloured Italian oil varnish to accentuate every detail of the stunning wood. The scroll of the violin is not original, but a later Italian example made in Florence.
Made in his hometown of Bologna c.1710 - 1715, the violin was created by the great Italian luthier Carlo Tononi under the watchful eye of his father Giovanni. In the last few years before moving to Venice in 1717 he made instruments varying in influences and models, this fine example having a typically high arched front.
Physically the violin is standard sized but petite, especially the neck, making for effortless playing across the entire fingerboard. Matched with a powerful tone, it is a superb blend of comfort and huge potential.
Extra features of the instrument are fine vintage rosewood pegs with brass inlays and an original Hill tailpiece and saddle. The violin has been setup with a Ruschil London bridge and Thomastik Peter Infeld Silver G, D, A with a Warchal Amber Forte E string to perform at the highest level.
The violin comes with full certification from Eric Blot, Cremona.
